  • Is the Burghotel Auf Schönburg a genuine historical castle?

Yes. Schönburg Castle is a genuine historical castle complex above Oberwesel. Its origins date back around 1,000 years. Today, the castle houses a family-run hotel with individually furnished rooms and suites, restaurants, a tower museum, and a castle garden spanning more than two hectares.

  • How far is Schönburg Castle from Oberwesel train station?

Schönburg Castle is located about two kilometers from Oberwesel train station. Since the castle is situated above the town, the route is mostly uphill. Depending on your fitness level and luggage, you should allow approximately 30 to 40 minutes for the walk.

  • Can a taxi be arranged from the train station?

Yes, we would be happy to arrange a taxi for you from Oberwesel train station to Schönburg Castle, provided you book in advance. The fare is usually around €18 to €20 and is paid directly to the driver in cash. As there is no taxi company operating regularly in Oberwesel, we recommend booking in advance.

  • Is there an elevator?

An elevator is available in parts of the hotel. However, due to the castle's historical architecture, not all rooms, floors, and hotel areas are accessible by elevator. Depending on the room, additional stairs may be necessary.

Please let us know before booking if you have any difficulty climbing stairs. We will be happy to advise you on choosing the most accessible room.

  • Is the hotel wheelchair accessible?

Unfortunately, the historic castle complex is not wheelchair accessible. There are steps at the entrance and in various areas of the hotel. Furthermore, the path from the parking lot to the hotel entrance is about 150 meters uphill along a partially uneven cobblestone path.

Access through the castle wall is also narrow in places. Therefore, the hotel is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with significant mobility limitations.

  • Are pets allowed?

No. Out of consideration for guests with allergies, pets are not allowed anywhere in the hotel.

  • Do all rooms have a view of the Rhine?

No. Due to the historical architecture and the varying locations of the rooms, not all rooms have a view of the Rhine. Some rooms and suites offer a direct or partial view of the Rhine, while others overlook the castle courtyard, the castle grounds, or the valley at the rear of the castle.

If a view of the Rhine is particularly important to you, we recommend specifically selecting a corresponding room when booking.

  • Is there air conditioning?

No, due to the building's historical structure, the hotel does not have air conditioning. However, each room has at least one fan. We can provide a second fan depending on availability.

  • Is the castle garden open to the public?

No. The castle garden, which covers more than two hectares, is exclusively for our hotel guests. The garden lies below the castle and can be reached via several flights of stairs in about five to ten minutes.

Among other things, there are two ponds, various resting places, an outdoor library, a swing and other small discoveries.

  • Can day visitors visit the tower museum?

Yes. The tower museum can also be visited by day visitors during regular opening hours. Unfortunately, access is not possible outside of these times, even for hotel guests.

Among other things, visitors to the museum can expect to find 122 steps, historical exhibition areas, a double portcullis, a crossbow stand and a slingshot simulation.

  • Is it possible to eat in the restaurant without staying at the hotel?

Yes. Both restaurants are generally open to non-hotel guests. Advance table reservations are strongly recommended, especially in the evenings and on weekends.

  • When do the kitchen and restaurant close?

Our restaurant "Zum Mundschenk – Auf Schönburg" is open daily from 12:00 to 22:00. The kitchen is open from 12:00 to 16:30 and from 17:30 to 20:00. Drinks are served until 22:00.

The Schönburg wine tavern is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm. The kitchen is open from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The wine tavern is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Opening hours may change seasonally or for operational reasons. We therefore recommend checking the current hours before your visit.

  • Are there vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free dishes available?

Yes. We regularly offer vegetarian dishes. Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free dishes are also available upon prior request.

Please inform us of any allergies or intolerances when making your reservation, if possible. This will allow our kitchen team to prepare accordingly. For severe allergies or celiac disease, we ask for particularly detailed information, as cross-contamination or traces cannot be completely ruled out in our kitchen despite our careful procedures.

  • Is there a parking space available?

Yes. Two parking areas are available free of charge for our hotel and restaurant guests in front of the castle. Reservations for individual parking spaces are not possible.

  • Can you drive right up to the hotel entrance?

No. Direct access to the hotel entrance by car is not possible due to the historic castle grounds. From the parking lot, a cobblestone path of approximately 150 meters leads uphill to the entrance.

For hotel guests, we offer a luggage service from the parking lot at certain times. This is generally available from 8:00 to 11:30 and from 15:00 to 19:30. Unfortunately, we cannot transport very heavy luggage weighing over 25 kilograms.

  • What are some nearby attractions?

Schönburg Castle is located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley and is a good starting point for numerous excursions. Nearby attractions include:

    • the historic old town of Oberwesel with its walkable city wall,
    • the Rheinsteig and other hiking trails,
    • the Loreley near St. Goarshausen,
    • St. Goar with Rheinfels Castle,
    • Bacharach with its historic old town,
    • Kaub with Pfalzgrafenstein Castle,
    • Rüdesheim am Rhein,
    • various castles and viewpoints along the Middle Rhine,
    • boat landings for excursions on the Rhine.

Wine tastings, hikes, bike tours and boat trips can also be easily combined with a stay at Schönburg Castle.

  • Is the hotel suitable for children?

Children are very welcome here. However, due to the historical construction, parents should be aware that the castle has many stairs, uneven paths, steep areas and some low walls.

The castle gardens and the tower museum are especially exciting for many children. However, parental supervision remains the responsibility at all times. We are not a typical children's hotel with childcare, a playroom, or extensive children's entertainment.

Baby cots and extra beds can be provided depending on the room and availability. Please indicate the children's ages when booking so we can recommend a suitable room.
